Today was
wonderful, lovely, perfect. It was warm out for December in Wyoming. The wind
was still. It was sunny, then worked into a light snow. A great day for working
horses! I had Mayfly, Huckleberry, and Twix all out to work. I had Bechler out
to work them off of. Bechler may be a grumpy old guy, but he is handy working a
colt. I don't think I could do anything on his back that would take him by
surprise.
After I
warmed up Bechler, I started out with Mayfly. She was standing strangely
patient. I ponied her for a little and sacked her out lightly with the flag.
She wasn't worried. I loomed over her and put my weight on her from Bechler's
back. No problem, so I got off. Did a few seconds of direct and drive, then
took her in the roundpen.
I didn't
take as much time getting on her this time. Bounced a few times, Stood up in
the stirrup a few times, then swung on up. This was only the second time I got
on her, so I stayed on a few seconds, then dismounted. I did that a few times
and she was rather relaxed. Then I upped what I was asking for. I asked for
forward movement. The first time I asked she just wanted to spin with me. Cool,
she can spin, but that wasn't what I wanted. The first time I said, ok, you
moved. Once I asked her to stop, I dismounted. The second time I wanted one
step forward. I kept asking until I got that one step, then we halted and I
dismounted. I did this a dozen more times until I got a number of forward steps
in a row, halt, then another dozen steps forward. At that point I called it a
day for her. I still had two more horses to work. Her allotted hour was up. I
was a proud mamma! This mare really wants to be good.
